Key Features of the Project

This project transformed an ageing timber frontage in Hillarys into a modern architectural boundary using custom timber-look aluminium slat panels integrated into the property’s existing limestone walling and pillars. Having previously trusted FencrGatr with their pool fencing, the homeowners came back to replace deteriorating timber with a premium low-maintenance alternative that better suited the home’s established coastal look. Rather than touching the masonry, the team modernised the frontage by fabricating timber-look aluminium infill panels to fit between the limestone piers and wall sections. The warm timber-look slats paired naturally with the earthy limestone tones and tied in with the home’s facade, garage door, and landscaping. The horizontal slat configuration created a clean, contemporary appearance while keeping a sense of openness and airflow across the front boundary. A matching aluminium side access gate completed the run, carrying the same design language right through the property. The main challenge was working with an older limestone structure where the wall openings and pillar spacings were not perfectly square or uniform, so each section was custom fabricated individually to suit the actual site conditions.

Products Used in the Project

The fence used custom fabricated timber-look aluminium slats in a horizontal profile, set into powder coated aluminium framing and supports. The side access gate was built from a fully welded aluminium frame fitted with external-grade hinges, a self-closing system, and double-sided locking hardware for secure family-friendly access. Every infill section was measured and fabricated to suit the varying pillar spacings and existing wall alignments, so the finished fence sat cleanly within the masonry openings. Timber-look aluminium gives the visual warmth of stained timber without the upkeep of real timber, so there is no rot, warping, splitting, fading, or ongoing staining and resealing to worry about, and it holds up well in Perth’s coastal environment. The existing timber fencing and gate elements were removed as part of the scope. All measure, fabrication, installation, and alignment works were carried out by FencrGatr.

Client Expectations and Feedback

The homeowners wanted a warm, modern architectural appearance with better durability and far lower maintenance than the timber it replaced, along with secure gated side access and a clean finish that worked within the existing limestone structure. As repeat clients, they already knew the standard of workmanship and communication to expect. The trickiest part was the home itself, where very little was actually square, so each panel and gate clearance had to be adjusted and fabricated to match. The finished result looks purpose-built with the original home rather than retrofitted afterward, and care was taken throughout to protect the established landscaping during the works. The client was very happy with the outcome. In her own words: “Having previously used FencrGatr for a new pool fence we had them back to replace an old wooden side gate and front wall panels with wood look aluminium. Efficient, punctual, great communication and fantastic end product (despite our awkward house where nothing is ever actually square). Highly recommended and reasonably priced.” Sara Clements, Hillarys.
