Key Features of the Project

This project combined solid Colorbond steel sheeting with an aluminium horizontal slat top extension to deliver a taller, more private boundary fence with a modern finish. The client needed extra height along a side and rear boundary that sat close to neighbouring two storey homes, but did not want a plain flat wall of steel. The solution was a standard Colorbond panel for the lower two thirds, giving full privacy and a clean unbroken face, topped with a run of evenly spaced horizontal aluminium slats to add height and a contemporary architectural detail. The slat section lets light and air pass through the upper portion while still lifting the overall height of the fence. Everything was finished in a matching dark charcoal tone so the slats and the Colorbond read as one continuous system. The fence was installed across uneven, freshly worked ground with sand fill and a section of existing limestone retaining blocks, so panels were set carefully to keep the top line straight and consistent along the full run.

Products Used in the Project

The lower fence used Colorbond steel infill sheets in a dark charcoal finish, fixed into steel posts with a steel plinth along the base to protect against ground contact and sand wash out. Above the Colorbond, aluminium horizontal slat extension panels were fitted between the posts, with the slats spaced evenly to provide a louvered, semi open top section. Posts were galvanised steel finished to match, with caps fitted to each. Colorbond and powder coated aluminium are both ideal for the Perth climate, resisting rust, fading, and the effects of harsh UV, and need very little maintenance beyond an occasional wash. The combination of solid sheeting below and slats above keeps full privacy at eye level while softening the look up top. All materials were supplied and installed by FencrGatr’s team to manufacturer specifications.

Client Expectations and Feedback

The client wanted more height and privacy along a boundary overlooked by taller neighbouring homes, but a standard height Colorbond fence on its own was not going to be enough, and a full height sheet wall would have felt heavy and closed in. They were after something that added height without looking like a fortress. FencrGatr recommended pairing the Colorbond with a horizontal slat top extension, which lifts the fence line and adds a sharp, modern detail while letting light filter through the upper section. The dark charcoal finish was chosen to suit the surrounding homes and give a clean, current look that would not date quickly. Working across the sandy, recently excavated ground and around the existing retaining wall took some care to keep posts plumb and the top line dead straight, but the finished run came up crisp and level from end to end. The client was very pleased with the result, noting that the added height gave them the privacy they were after and that the slat top lifted the whole look of the yard well beyond a standard fence.
